I welcome this book as a particular proof of vitality of Slovenia´s political and economic arrangements which enable the country to successfully take part in the development of the European Union. The comprehensive assessment of the past development of Slovenia, the comparative nature of the study and the wide variety of the subjects analysed (social, gender, environmental, religious etc.) which goes beyond pure analysis of the political system, give a fascinating overview of the Slovenian institutional "laboratory" as the authors call it. In this sense, I am convinced that the book will find the interest of both policy makers and political scientists not just in Slovenia but also across Europe. There is always something new to learn and there is plenty of it in this book.
Janez Potocnik Dieses Buch möchte drei wichtige Zielsetzungen erreichen und verwirklichen. Zunächst wird versucht, den Weg Sloweniens in den letzten beiden Jahrzehnten vor dem Hintergrund europäischer Wandlungs- und Veränderungsprozesse zu analysieren, um damit die Besonderheiten, aber auch die Gemeinsamkeiten der slowenischen Entwicklung besser und deutlicher zu erfassen. Weiters kommen in diesem Buch nicht nur die Standardbereiche von Politik und Wirtschaft zur Sprache, sondern es werden vielfältige andere Aspekte gesellschaftlicher Transformationsprozesse und Strukturbrüche thematisiert. In diesem Sinne finden sich neben einer Reihe von politischen Analysen auch Untersuchungen zur slowenischen Identitätsbildung oder Artikel zur Arbeitsflexibilität, zum Überdauern geschlechtsspezifischer Diskriminierungen oder zu Fragen des Umweltschutzes und des Umweltbewusstseins. Und darüber hinaus bleibt das Buch in all seinen Beiträgen einer empirisch angeleiteten Forschung verpflichtet und stützt sich in seinen wichtigen Aussagen und Hypothesen auf jenes reichhaltige Datenmaterial, das einer der Herausgeber, nämlich Niko Toš, über mehrere Jahrzehnte gesammelt und dokumentiert hat.
